Adorable Heart Footprint Canvas Makes a Wonderful Keepsake

Adorable Heart Footprint Canvas Makes a Wonderful Keepsake

After the birth of my fourth child, I wanted a cute way to remember her tiny feet. Not only did I want to remember her feet, I wanted to include the thee older kids too, so we created this adorable Heart Footprint Keepsake Canvas!

Supplies for Heart Footprint Keepsake

  • Canvas
  • Tempera Paint
  • Palette
  • Paint Brushes

Steps to Create Your Footprint Canvas

To start with I found a canvas big enough for all my kids feet. We used a 12 X 24 inch canvas, but any size can be used depending of the number and foot size of your kids. I took one of my oldest daughter's shoes with me to make sure they fit on the canvas!

To make the prints we used tempera paint, and I made sure to use a different color for each child. Actually for the older three, I made sure to use their favorite color. The baby just got a color different than the others. I went with red as it is a typical heart color, and none of my kids chose it.

Before starting I made sure I had everything ready, so I had a palette (paper plate) with paint on it for whichever kid I was working with and a glass of water to rinse the brush.  Of course, there was no way I wanted kids running around with paint on their feet, so I even set up a little foot washing station (tub of water with wash rag and a dry towel) next to where we made the prints.

Each kid got their own turn to make footprints. I painted one foot at a time and positioned them on the canvas. I gently pressed on the foot and then gently pressed the back of the canvas towards the foot. This was necessary because canvases were just stretched over a frame, so you can't have the kids step down on it as it won't hold their weight! If you used a flat canvas instead you could just let them step down on them which would probably give you a slightly cleaner print.

As soon as the prints were made the kids got to wash off their feet before running off! Then it was time for the baby. Luckily I had extra hands to help with her little feet! Since I knew her tiny feet wouldn't take up nearly as much room as the other kids, I used the same colors to paint the word love under her tiny feet. Before painting the letters, I lightly wrote them on the canvas in pencil to make sure they took up the appropriate amount of room. I also ended up writing their names next to their feet; I guess I just didn't want my brain to fail me.

It was a pretty easy little project since we were prepared to avoid messes! And now everyone can look back and see how little all of their feet were at that point in time.
